The Down Low Phenomenon

So, there I was about to fall asleep because the Bulls-Magic game on my TV screen was holding about as much of my interest as a Tim Duncan interview being conducted by Tim Duncan. With my clicker in hand, a channel search soon ended up on good ‘ol B.E.T. where two black ass dudes were caressing each other. Stunned, I fumbled with my remote to turn from this ASAP when the scene quickly switched to a mad ass Terry McMillan and I just couldn’t turn because I saw the ether in her eyes and there was no way I was going to hear about this from second hand. With that decision made, for the next hour, I was a captive of Down Low Exposed a B.E.T. expose'. For those that missed it, forgot about it, or just couldn’t stomach it because of the “disturbing” imagery and/or subject matter, here are some Fiya-bullets I jotted down:

DL Brother stands for “Down Low” Brother.
DL brothers can pop up anywhere, like in the beds of heterosexual women, who should be seeing feminine traits in their men.
DL King, aka that nigga who was on Oprah, aka the Martin Luther King, Jr. of the DL is caking off this lame ass branding of homosexuality something serious. He’s paid.
Terry McMillan is mad that nigga “tricked” her.
Wanna know how paid DL King is? His ex-wife is more than willing to look like a damn fool on the black people television network, sitting next to this dude who could have HIV’d her ass up because he promised her a cut if she cosigned him.
Bill Duke ain’t DL (not to our knowledge, anyway), but that ain’t gonna stop him from cashing in on some of this money. (He’s making a film about it)
R. Kelly’s (Keep it on the) Down Low was used on this program for no other reason than its title. It didn’t have anything to do with any damn thing. *Also, there’s no explanation I can provide as to why they used so many Kanye West songs...
DL King acknowledges his luckiness in health as he portrays himself as the gay Wilt Chamberlain, numerous times.
Terry McMillan will shank that nigga.
A little doctor resembling Eartha Kitt thinks this King guy is insecure and fulla shit.
It was a bit disturbing to see sketch of the Omega Psi Phi brother depicting some DL activity on King’s wall.
King’s ex-wife is a little too happy. She made some chamomile tea, for God’s sake. Just how much did she get paid?
When told that her ex-husband (a DL’er) says he still loves her, McMillan remarks “Fuck him!”
Apparently, DL’ers frequent church quite a bit.
Hold up, how come they’re just filming any and every black man on the street? They’re gonna get one of these scared black women smacked asking her dude if he’s an ankle grabber.

At this point, the real concern and purpose of this program materialized (well, besides King cashing in on yet another gay moment in black history): the segue to the issue of HIV as a result of these Down Low Brothers infecting their women.

Let’s not kid ourselves here, faggotry is nothing new. And the truth is nobody cared much about it until women started contracting that monster and if someone tries to tell you different, they’re lying. They’d also be lying if they tried to co-sign Terry McMillan’s sentiment of just wanting to know the truth, because the real truth is deep down, a lot of women know their man is probably gay just like their best girlfriend knows her straight man is cheating on her with another woman. Neither of them cares though because the important thing is they got a man. I say women, step your common sense up and stop settling because that settling has turned into gambling and all the Magic in Orlando can’t save you if you catch that monster.
