Nope,
it had to be done. Look, it’s not our intention to
be insensitive to our past champions of history, civil rights
and all that good stuff, but we’ll put it to you this
way; if you recognize the name, but you can’t place
the face on the figure, then you’re working from the
2nd tier. |
Ralph
Bunche
-Bunche rose from modest circumstances to become the foremost international
mediator and peacekeeper of his time. His parents died when he
was just 13. Forced to live with his grandmother and be the
man of the house and while attending school full time, he held
down jobs as a janitor, carpet-layer and seaman. Ralph learned
at a young age, whitey wasn’t going to give him a damn thing
and all that hand-to-foot work made his back hurt. He went on
to dominate his studies, win the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize, and become
a key drafter of the United Nations charter. Ralph’s living
legacy also includes major contributions to world decolonization,
conflict resolution and advancements in human and civil rights
at home and across the Diaspora. Ralph liked using his mind more
than his feet, hands and especially his damn back.
Paul Robeson
-Simply put, Paul Robeson was Ben Vereen to the 10 millionth power
plus one. To be a little more in depth with it, he was a singer,
actor, civil rights activist, law school graduate, athlete, scholar,
and author who knew over 20 languages. As perhaps the best known
and most widely respected black American of the 1930s and 1940s,
whitey prodded at the only chink he could find in Paul’s wall
of armor; he called him a communist. He was accused of trying to
set up a communist state in the south, as if he was that stupid.
Robeson questioned and got on the bad side of the government. Paul
Robeson died on January 23, 1976.
Carter G. Woodson
-Regarded by many as the father of the Black History Month, Carter
was driven his whole life by a possessed and unquenchable thirst
for learning so he could expose white peoples' wrong ass prejudices.
In Chicago in 1915, he founded the Association for the Study
of Negro Life and History. In the same year he founded The
Journal of Negro History. As a publisher of over 30 books,
mostly about how wrong crackers were in their assessment of the
Negro (that was the word they used back then, don’t be offended),
Carter was probably best known for his masterpiece The Mis-Education
of the Negro, published in 1933. In this he stated, "When
you control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his
actions…You do not need to send him to the back door. He will
go without being told. In fact, if there is no back door, he will
cut one for his special benefit. His education makes it necessary."
That Carter G. had a great sense of humor, too.
Adam Clayton Powell
-Slick Harlem Civil Rights maneuverer that became the first Black
congressman from the Eastern seaboard since the time of Reconstruction
in 1944. In 1967 after continued disapproval by his jealous pencil
neck peers, those same irate congressmen leveled a trumped-up charge
of misuse of funds against Powell stripping him of his seniority
and power and refused to seat him. Adam didn’t care much,
he still had his women and drink (Oh yeah, those are things he liked).
He wanted to stick it to whitey one more time though, so in 1969,
he regained his seat and during his last term he protested against
the Vietnam War and fought President Nixon on cutting subsidies
for food stamps.
Nathanial “Nat” Turner
-Terrorized then killed over 50 white people in two days in 1831
and got his ass hanged for it.
