Album Review (kinda)

POINTING POSERS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

I’ve decided to do this monthly breakdown for no other reason than my frustration with people who simply don’t know good music when they hear it and leave themselves open to the systematic brainwashing popular media routinely conducts on people too stupid to know any better.

Gnarls Barkley, St. Elsewhere: They’re hotter than the sun right now, having been adopted by backpackers and bandwagon hipsters alike. Sadly, once you get past Crazy and the image-conscious wardrobes, they are just two ugly nerds who make boring music. But, you can’t tell hipsters that.

Recommendation: Download Crazy and put it on your iPod's party playlist. Do not buy that CD.

Nelly Furtado, Loose: Weak voice and a pretty face, with a hip-hop edge. Was there ever any doubt her album would be a hit? As a result of her partnership with Timbaland, Furtado has taken over the “Pop-Hop White Girl That Gets Play On Black Radio” throne that was abdicated by Gwen Stefani. None of this matters, because she’ll be an actress in five years.

Recommendation: This thing should only be owned by young women who work in cubicles and regularly read Perez Hilton.

Cat Power, The Greatest: One of the truly talented and original artists in the music business. Power has the voice of a ghost, which combined with her remarkable ear for instrumental arrangement, allows her to reach heights of sonic sadness of which Billy Corgan and Trent Reznor could only dream. Willie is the best track I have heard in years from any artist in any genre. It is an undeniable masterpiece.

Recommendation: Purchase ASAP.

Corinne Bailey Rae, Corinne Bailey Rae: I’ll be very upfront about my hate for this album: She’s no Rebekah. She’s not even close to Rebekah. If you really wanna hear music from a supremely talented black female, go find you a copy of Rebekah’s Remember To Breathe.

Recommendation: Remember to buy Remember To Breathe by Rebekah.
